How to Shape Your Brows for the Holiday...Fast

HOW TO USE THE GREAT COVER UP TO SHAPE + SHADE YOUR BROWS

‘Tis the season to be busy, busy, busy, and here’s how to make sure your brows are looking beautiful no matter how much is left on your to-do list. 

1. Choose the perfect shade for your eyebrows

The great thing about The Great Cover Up (and only one of the many reasons we call it Great) is that you can match your brows to your hair color, easy. 2. Brush your eyebrows

The Great Cover Up comes with two brushes--a wide brush for covering your roots, and a double-ended brush for your brows. On one end of the brow brush is a spoolie, and the other end is a short brush to fill in over-plucked, over-tweezed, or just plain sparse brows. Using the spoolie end of the brow brush, brush your brows upwards. You can use brow scissors if you have any super long hairs that stick way beyond your brows. 

3. Fill in your eyebrows

Now use the short brush end and fill in your brows with the powder. This is important: do not use a heavy hand here! Small, hair-like strokes are what you want to be doing to mimic the natural look of your eyebrows. No long, flat, thick, straight lines. Use small flicking motions in the direction of your hair growth for the perfect eyebrow.

4. Brush your eyebrows back in place

Once you’ve filled in your brows, it’s time to brush them back in place using the spoolie. This is when you can play a bit with eyebrow shape. 

5. Create an eyebrow arch 

Now it’s time for shaping. The arch is by far the hero of your eyebrows. But if you get the arch wrong, it can be the villain. Arches that are too pointy? You look comically surprised or angry. But even if you weren’t born with a high arch, you can still fake a natural eyebrow shape subtly. Here’s how: hold a pencil against your nostril and line it up diagonally with the center pupil of your eye. Right above there is where you want your eyebrow to arch. The trick is to have a very small peak, nothing too exaggerated. Think soft, subtle...not surprised.

6. Create your eyebrow end point

Now it’s time to look at the end point of your brows, a.k.a. the “tail” of your brows. Be careful not to overextend the tail, as this can make your face look a little droopy. To measure where the end of your brow should be, place a pencil diagonally at your nostril and line it up with the outer corner of your eye. Where the pencil hits your brow bone is where your brow should end without looking fake. Again, use the short brush and apply with a small flicking motion to mimic the natural look of your brows.

7. Fill in any sparse spots

What the pluck—we’ve all been there. Over-tweezed, over-plucked, or thinning brows due to aging or health...no matter the cause, The Great Cover Up powder is a fantastic way to make your brows look fuller. Over-plucking has met its match! Just follow the natural shape of your brows and fill in. We recommend starting with a light hand as it’s easier to build than remove powder. This is one reason we prefer brow powder to a brow pencil or a brow gel—it’s easier to apply and results in a natural-looking brow.

8. Concealer FTW

Done with your brows? Now for the pièce de résistance! Apply concealer just below your brows to make those perfect brows pop. It looks more natural than using a highlighter, and helps cover up any un-tweezed stray eyebrow hair.

THE BEST BROW SHAPE FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE

Now that you know HOW to shape your brows, let’s talk about the best brow shape for your face. In general, we think staying as close to your natural brow shape as possible is your best bet, but if you want to add a little oomph to get the perfect brow, here’s how to start shaping...

THE PERFECT BROWS FOR A SQUARE-SHAPED FACE

If your forehead, jawline, and cheekbones are all roughly the same width, you have what is called a square-shaped face. Think Angelina Jolie and Rihanna. To accentuate your eyes, you’ll want slightly angled eyebrows to add depth and soften the angles of your face. Avoid a high arch or rounded eyebrow shapes.

THE PERFECT BROWS FOR A LONG-SHAPED FACE

A long-shaped face is similar to a square shape, but with less pronounced angles. Lucy Liu and Liv Tyler both have long face shapes. To add width to your face, shape your brows to be slightly flat, curving downward at the end to give a slight arch.

THE PERFECT BROWS FOR A HEART-SHAPED FACE

If your forehead is wider than your chin, and your chin is very narrow, then you have a heart-shaped face. Naomi Campbell and Scarlett Johansson both have heart-shaped faces. You will want to stay away from very high arches, and will want to try a rounded eyebrow shape. 

THE PERFECT BROWS FOR A ROUND-SHAPED FACE

A round face is marked by roughly the same width and length, as seen in Chrissy Teigen and Mila Kunis. The goal for brows on a round face is to elongate the face. To do this, you will want high-arched brows to create the illusion of a thinner face. Avoid straight or overly rounded brows.
